Abstract

The study examined the extent of implementation of the strategic plan on standard and quality assurance in secondary education in Nigeria. One research question guided the study and one hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 1,226 respondents made up of 12 principals and 1,214 teachers from the 12 Federal Government Colleges in South East, Nigeria. Twenty percent of teachers were sampled for the study using simple random sampling while the entire population of principals was used because they were manageable. This amounted to a sample of 254 respondents (242 principals and 12 principals). The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire developed by the researcher based on the activities proffered in the strategic plan. The instrument was validated by three experts, two in educational management and policy and one in measurement and evaluation in the faculty of education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The instrument was further subjected to reliability testing through a pilot test on 20 educational planners in Delta State who were not included in the population of the study. The application of Cronbach Alpha reliability method on the obtained data yielded coefficient value of 0.86 for internal consistency. Data collected from the respondents were analyzed with mean, standard deviation and t-test. Finding reveals that the strategic plan on standard and quality assurance in secondary schools in Nigeria have been implemented to a low extent. Finding revealed no significant difference in the mean ratings of principals and teachers on the extent the strategic plans on standard and quality assurance in secondary schools have been implemented in South East, Nigeria. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended among others, that government should as a matter of urgency make available funds for the full implementation of the strategic plan. It was also recommended that the federal and state ministries of education should improve on their collaboration with the private sector in the areas of infrastructural development, funding and expertise development.

ABSTRACT

The justification for traditional science practices is that people construct a safer science able to solve African problems and other nagging world problems. In the process of industrialization, local knowledge is often developed relative to the modern knowledge and technologies that develop to serve the needs of the new commodity generating economy in developing countries like Nigeria. It is often the case that women , ethnic minorities and others remaining more on the margins of the new economy, and this allows them to retain indigenous knowledge long and the sudden commercial interest in indigenous practices often target women and themselves as potential sources of this local knowledge for industrialization. This paper examines the African indigenous practices and knowledge acquired among women and how these practices are blinded with the related science concepts. It shows that African traditional practices are thought system that can have equivalent value with the scientific practices in the western paradigm system though it is not itself paradigmal. The indigenous practices and knowledge acquired among women must convince others that these practices are tools to help them as well as translating what they practice and relate it’s to science classroom. Two research questions guided the study. Samples of sixty (60) participants consisting of skilled and unskilled women in confined internally displaced area (IDA) of the community or camp (in Maiduguri) were targeted, and science teachers teaching science subjects were randomly selected from the post primary schools in the IDA camps in Maiduguri metropolitan council. The instrument used to collect the data were check list, oral interview and simple percentage and frequency counts were used to express the data. It was found that most of the women do practice the indigenous practices and few do not practiced it and that ll the identified indigenous practices are embedded with science concepts, ideas and principle

THE JOURNALIST AND SOCIAL BURDEN: A CRITIQUE OF MODE OF COVID -19 REPORT

KABIRU IDRIS MUHAMMAD

Department of Mass Communication, School of General Studies, Kano State Polytechnic

Abstract

This paper explores the impact of mass media in capturing and disseminating Covid -19 related news. It also critiques the looming challenges that bedevil a Covid -19 reporter amidst the unprecedented spread of the virus. The paper further argues that a journalist should be patriot in reporting Covid -19 news objectively. This is for reason that Covid-19 is a global infectious disease that has affected many millions of people in the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic on Jan 30, 2020, given its rising alarm on international public health concerns for it. Infact, it creates a public worry and force the general public to seek help from the most accessible ways available to them to keeping them informed about the effect of the virus as well as precautionary measures they would adopt in curtailing the spread of the virus. For most people, it is either the internet or media, which includes print, as well as broadcast options. In this way, the paper brings to the fore certain guiding light that will aid the reporter to unburden his civic responsibility as well as clinging onto his professional expertise as well as acumen in relaying covid – 19 news. Some reporters shy away from their responsibility in giving authentic and reliable story, because of their sentimental whims. The virus is life-threatening in that care must be taken in revealing all coverage of disease by a journalist or a reporter. The paper offers some recommendations on how to improve in curtailing the disease and conclusion is given as well.

Abstract

This research work has been embarked upon by the researcher as a result of negligence by almost all of the Nigerian secondary school teachers, particularly those of some selected areas where the researcher had opportunity to reach, for not effectively making use of pertinent instructional media in their English lesson classrooms. The researcher applied relevant methodology with appropriate instrument via which the necessary data was gotten and which directly proved the findings that the secondary school English teachers in Nigeria do not have the materials and are not encouraged and trained to improvise. State ministries of education, universal basic education boards and federal ministry of education care not to provide such materials to the schools nor do they urge the secondary school principals to make sure that the English teachers improvise and make use of pertinent instructional media when teaching English language in their various classrooms. With the aid of the results realised, the researcher suggests that the authorities concern should provide modern instructional materials for teaching English to secondary schools in Nigeria and give training and encouragement to teachers in both urban and rural areas to improvise in the absence of governmental intervention on the task. The Federal Ministry of Education has to ensure provision of all types of instructional materials especially those meant for teaching language, and put compulsion in its utilization.

Abstract

Tinea capitis (ringworm) medically known as dermatophytosis is caused by dermatophytes which are a unique group of highly specialized fungi that use keratin to grow and therefore infect keratinous tissues of lower animals and humans. This infection is a common skin disorder that occurs across age and sex groups with high frequency occurring in pre-pubertal, nursery and primary school children aged between 6 and 13 years. This study was aimed at determining and comparing the prevalence of Tinea capitis among Private and Public Nursery and Primary School Pupils in the Oyo Metropolis. A descriptive, cross-sectional research involving 200 pupils from a randomly selected 5 private and 5 public nursery and primary schools in Oyo West Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria. This is a cross-sectional study carried out among 200 school going children during the period between April and August 2019. Interview and direct body examination for dermatophytosis infection were conducted on the consented pupils. In a total of one hundred and twenty (120) children infected 50 (41.63%) were from private schools while 70 (58.33%) from public school. The overall prevalence rates of Tinea capitis infection was 60%). In the two categories of schools, the prevalence of infection was higher in male 72(60%) than in female 48(40%). This research work recorded a 58.33% prevalence rate of Tinea capitis infection among public schools understudied. This study scientifically substantiates the undocumented assertion that public schools have a high prevalence rate of infectious diseases than privates schools. The high prevalence rate was identified to be as a result of regular exposure to various predisposing factors to Tinea capitis infection. Health promotion and health education interventions should be enhanced to promote good hygiene, better living conditions, early identification, and treatment of infection.

Department of Curriculum and Instruction, School of General Education, Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo.

Abstract

The competency profile of a teacher is fundamental to the development of professional standards of pre-service teachers through exposure to teaching practice exercise. This requires being knowledgeable in both content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge. This paper assessed pre-service Chemistry and English language teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge in electrolysis transformation and tenses in English in Osun State respectively with a view to diagnosing, remediating and improving pre-service training strategies. The study adopted the survey strategy of enquiry of triangulation type. The population for the sample comprised Chemistry and English language pre-service teachers in Colleges of Education in Osun State that participated in the 2019 teaching practice exercise. The study sample consisted of 42 Chemistry and 64 English language pre-service teachers totalling 106 selected using convenience sampling technique. Three instruments used for data collection are titled: Pre-service Chemistry Teachers’ Achievement Test (PCTAT) and Pre-service English Language Teachers’ Achievement Test (PELTAT) to explore the content knowledge, Pre-service teachers’ lesson plan and observational checklist titled: Pre-service Teachers’ Observation Checklist (PTOC) for pedagogical content knowledge. The reliability of PCTAT and PELTAT through test-retest method with a co-efficient of 0.79. PTOC was based on introduction of the lesson, lesson development and lesson evaluation and categorized into Highly Knowledgeable (HK), Knowledgeable (K), Low Knowledgeable (LK) and Very Low Knowledgeable (VLK). The results showed that pre-service teachers have sufficient content knowledge in their respective subject areas. While about 81% of the samples for pre-service Chemistry teachers had sufficient content knowledge in electrolysis transformation, about 78.1% of their counterpart in English language had sufficient content knowledge in tenses transformation. The result further revealed that both pre-service Chemistry and English language teachers do not have sufficient pedagogical content knowledge in their introductory lesson delivery with the ground means   = 2.32, = 2.34 for lesson development and = 2.26 for lesson evaluation. The study recommends that lectures in the school of education should try to improve on current pedagogy in Colleges of Education, authorities of Colleges of Education should recommend to the government for employing more teaching staff, while the government should accede to employing more lecturers in the schools of education in the colleges, and organize seminars for pre-service teachers before going for teaching practice.
